Tapping for Sap

The kindergarten students have been learning all about maple syrup; how it turns from sap in a tree to syrup on our pancakes. We read two books, "At Grandpa's Sugar Bush" (fiction)and "A Day at the Sugar Bush" (non-fiction, we learned more about the process.
At the end of last week, Mr. McKay came to the school to tap the maple tree in our play area! First he drilled a hole in the tree about 3cm deep. Then he gently used his hammer to tap in the spigot/spile (from the books we read, we learned that both terms can be used). The spigot/spile has a hook on it so it can hold the sap bucket.
Now we are waiting for warmer weather so we can see the sap start to run.
