The last two weeks have been busy in kindergarten! The days have been zooming by; it's hard to believe we're nearing the end of May.
Both A and B Day classes have continued to get outside for our 30x30 Challenge. Although students are having a tough time remembering who we made the outside for thirty minutes for thirty days promise to (David Suzuki), they remember that we need to go outside everyday and are having a fun time as well.
We have been going outside in all types of weather. Earlier two weeks ago, our game of choice was the Screaming Game .. who can complain about a game where you get to run and scream?! The grey skies and wet weather also gave us a chance to see and collect lots of worms. While we were collecting, we were counting and talking about more and less, all part of Numeracy.
Last week, the weather turned nice and the A Day class learned a new game - Treasure Hunters. The object of the game was to see how many "treasures" you could get from the other hoops. After the time was up, the Treasure Hunters counted their treasure. Did they have more, less, or the same amount as when they started?
Inside, our science area is growing. We have a new, huge, tank for Tallulah. She is so happy having lots of space to swim. Ms. McDowell also brought in some branches for us to investigate. We discovered that the bark is missing, but we are trying to figure out what happened to it. Some suggestions were that the branches have allergies, that they came off in a thunder storm, and that a dog ate it. Next time Ms. McDowell is in, she will tell us the secret. We have also been doing some gardening, with the first step planting seeds. We are hoping to grow lettuce, beans, peas, and onions. If we are lucky, we will have some to try and some to share.
The Birthday Party area continues to be a hit. Thank you to all the students that have donated materials, and especially to Alex in the A Day class for his unique contributions. We have streamers, balloons, party hats, noise makers, lanterns, and a disco ball!
There continues to be a lot of building going on in Room 106. Maybe the construction around the school is serving as inspiration for the students. Egg carton towers continue to be a hit, but we have some new blocks that have been getting a lot of use and some amazing castles and towers are being built. The B Day students also gave building with marshmallows and toothpicks. Figuring out how to keep the structures standing was a bit of a challenge, but a fun one.
Finally, last Thursday B Day students enjoyed trying a way to paint ..they borrowed the technique of painting laying down like the famous artist Michelangelo. The A Day students will need to give this activity a try as there was a lot of fun (and problem solving) to be had with the process.
