Earth Ranges in Room 106: Feeding Local Winter Birds

Earlier this month, the students in Room 106 completed the first half of an Earth Rangers task - they made bird feeders for local winter birds. By stringing Cheerios onto coloured wool, students made simple bird feeders that the birds would be sure to enjoy.

While we were waiting for the weather to warm up enough to go out and hang them, we read the story "That Chickadee Feeling". The story is about that special feeling you get when something, often very special, makes you very happy. Students shared what gave them that "chickadee" feeling. We got answers that included watching their first hockey game and playing in their first hockey game.

Talking about chickadees lead us to talking about other winter birds that we might see in the area. We came up with a pretty good list: chickadees, cardinals, and blue jays. We then found images and sound clips of their songs online.

The weather warmed up enough one day last week for us to hang the bird feeders. We hung them along the fence line where we would be able to see them from our classroom windows. We are excited to see the birds as they enjoy their winter treats.
