Bakery to Birthday Party

Last Wednesday was an exciting day in Room 106. All morning I had been listening to a number of students planning "surprise parties" for each other in the Bakery. They would make a birthday cake, hide, and then surprise someone, while singing "Happy Birthday" and chanting "Are you 1? Are you 2? Are you 3? ...".

After recess, I called the students to the carpet and told them I had been listening to the fun they were having and wondered if they would like to change the Bakery into a Birthday Party. They loved the idea.

The first thing we did was make a list of all the things you would find at a Birthday Party. I was quite surprised by how extensive the list was! Next, we circled all the things that we could make, using materials we already had in the classroom. There were some items that we couldn't make ourselves, which would require a trip to the Dollar Store.

After we finished the planning stage, we needed to remove everything from the Bakery that wouldn't be found at a Birthday Party. The students got busy moving furniture, picking up loose pieces, and putting things back where they belonged. Once that was out of they way, they were ready to make the decorations. They used the long roll of paper to cut streamers and made paper balloons, and kept me busy hanging everything. I went to the Dollar Store today so we could finish with the decorating and let the partying begin.

If you have any items at home that you would like to add to our Birthday Party centre, feel free to send them in!
