It started off small - Riley was sliding and rolling under table to table and I asked him what he was doing. "Being Indiana Jones", he responded. I should've know, right?! I told Ms de Vries and we decided to go with it and put up streamers so the students would have something step over and crawl under.
The students took it to the next level. The streamers became laser beams and if you touched one, you would get zapped and fall unconscious (adults had super powers to bypass this). I heard "emergency!" and looked over to see a student down and another doing"chest compressions", trying to bring him "back to life".
Again, the students took it to the next level. We suddenly had paramedics coming to the aid of the unconscious girls and boys. Of course the paramedics would need to get them to surgery so Owen R became CEO of the hospital, with a staff of doctors and nurses working under his direction.
The class worked together for the better part of the day. Some were Indiana Jones, some were patients, we had doctors and nurses, and there were others that contributed to the overall design of the hospital, making signs for the entrance and hospital rules.
Two weeks later, Riley found an Indiana Jones book at the library. I read it to the class and they got excited about Indiana Jones all over again. It was a Thursday so Ms de Vries and I decided to make the following day Indiana Jones Friday. We brainstormed a list of Indiana Jones-like things and waited to see what the next day would bring.
Starting with a password to enter the class, students came in and got into their Indy gear. We had put up "laser" streamers again, as well as a bridge to take them safely across the "hot lava".
A number of students had made maps at home, so we had groups working together to find treasures.
Ms de Vries made a hieroglyphics puzzle for each students to solve.
It was a busy and happy day for everyone. Thanks for the great idea Riley!
