Over the past two weeks, our class has been visited by Kingsley the Kindness Elf. He has been challenging our class to do kind things for others.
First, Kingsley asked us to be polite, using manners when speaking to others. Then he asked us to share with others by donating to the Christmas for Kids drive at school.
Lastly, Kingsley left a number of jobs for us to do in order to get ready for our biggest act of kindness of all - a visit to Lakeside Retirement, where we would spread joy and happiness by singing and sharing with others.
Over the course of three days last week, students prepared for their visit by making Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays cards. The first step was to do marble painting using seasonal colours.
The next day, students cut triangles and circles from their paintings to decorate the front of the cards like Christmas trees and ornaments. Finally, students glued the messages "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" inside the cards.
This morning the students in our class walked to Lakeside Retirement. When we got there, at least 30 residents were waiting to hear us sing. We have been practicing our songs since the beginning of December and I don't think we've ever sounded better than we did today. It made me feel so proud of every girl and boy in our class.
After singing, students handed out the cards that they made to the residents. Again, I couldn't have felt more proud. Each and every person in the room had at least one card to take back to their room with them and everyone in the room had a smile on their face. I think Kingsley would have felt just as proud as I did because the room was filled with kindness.
As we made the walk back to school, it was so nice to hear the girls and boys talk about the experience at Lakeside. For children only 3, 4, and 5 years old, I think they were all so smart today because they saw how they could make others feel good and special just by being kind.
Thank you very much to the volunteers that came with us today. I hope you enjoyed the morning as much as we did :)
